Within China's orbit? China through the eyes of the Australian parliament
Timothy Kendall / Australian Parliamentary Fellowship, Parliamentary Library
As the People’s Republic of China continues to
develop as the subject of intense economic, political and cultural interest,
this study examines the place ‘China’ has held in the parliamentary imagination
by exploring the history of the Australian parliament’s dealings with China. The
monograph’s period of historical focus is broad: it begins with an analysis of
Federation debates over immigration restriction and concludes with a detailed
assessment of the bilateral relationship during the 41st Parliament (November
2004–November 2007).

Killing for Honour
At least 5000 women a year are killed by their male relatives for
"dishonouring" their family name. Muslim religious leaders site the
Quran to support the practice. But Christian families are also known to conduct
honour killings. Catholic Norma Khouri wrote the book, Forbidden
Love about her close friend in Jordan who lost her life through an honour
killing. Now in Australia, Khouri is fighting to overturn the
practice.

Year
12 Retention Rates Improving
Figures
released by the ABS in its regular 'Schools Australia' bulletin show a national
year 12 retention rate of 73.4% - up from 72.3% and the highest since 1994.
These latest figures show increasing retention rates for Indigenous students in
both junior and senior high school. Last year, for example, 86% of young
Indigenous people stayed to at least year 10, compared with 78.6% in 1994. More
than half stayed to year 11, and slightly more than a third to year 12. Whilst
these rates are well below those of the non-Indigenous population, there have
been improvements each year from 1994 to 2001.
