Understanding accredited qualifications
“Accredited” has a specific meaning. Check what is formally recognised before spending money on a leadership program.
Four different outcomes
| Term | What to verify |
|---|---|
| AQF qualification | Qualification title, level and recognised provider. |
| Professional certification | Issuing body, assessment and renewal requirements. |
| Membership or post-nominal | Admission rules and ongoing membership conditions. |
| Short course certificate | Whether it records attendance or assessed competence. |
The Australian Qualifications Framework is the national policy for regulated qualifications in Australia. A short course may still be valuable, but its marketing language does not make it an AQF qualification.
How to verify a claim
- Ask for the exact name of the qualification or award.
- Check the provider and course on the applicable official register, or with a self-accrediting higher education provider.
- Confirm prerequisites, assessment and whether the credential expires.
- Compare the credential with the requirements in current job advertisements.

Use the right register
For vocational education and training, search the National Training Register for the qualification and the registered training organisation. For higher education, TEQSA explains how to check providers and accredited courses, including the role of self-accrediting institutions. An RTO number on a provider’s website is only a starting point; confirm its current registration and scope.
Check the actual award
Ask whether the course leads to a qualification, unit of competency, statement of attainment, professional certification or a provider’s completion certificate. Request the exact title and any assessment conditions in writing. Do not infer formal recognition from phrases such as “industry recognised”.
Match recognition to your goal
Some employers care about a licence or regulated qualification; others care about experience and assessed performance. Search job criteria before spending. A non-award course can still be useful when it provides coached practice in a skill you need immediately.
