Press Release January 2011

Leadership Competencies in Crisis Management

As Queensland’s South East was affected by significant floods early in 2011 reaching unprecedented levels, with three quarters of the state being declared a Disaster Zone, Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh is to be commended for her leadership in managing this devastating crisis.

Premier Bligh’s leadership and management during this crisis demonstrates her ability for sense making and fostering governmental agility whilst maintaining effective public relations to lead Queensland through the various crisis phases and engage the nation’s support.

Research has shown that leadership competencies required of leaders and managers in times of relative calm are distinct from the skill set required to effectively manage a crisis. A leader’s ability to make sound and rapid decisions under pressure becomes a core competency to effective crisis handling.

In this devastating crisis in Queensland with challenges on a multitude of fronts, the Australian Centre for Leadership for Women (CLW) would like to acknowledge Premier Bligh’s leadership in guiding and supporting Queenslanders through this crisis.  CLW also acknowledges the immense challenges women are facing in the re to save their families, businesses and assist others in their communities.
