A Humanitarian Crisis

Kids for Kids logo

The tragic situation in Darfur in the west of Sudan in Africa has been called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Despite being three times the size of the United Kingdom, Darfur has been ignored by the world, until the terrible conflict which is currently tearing communities apart.   Added to this, there has been no rain in large areas of Darfur for 4 years. People are forced to desert their homes. Many have been living on wild food for months. Called Mukheit, it is highly toxic and has to be soaked and strained every day for 10 days to be edible. The drought has taken its toll of crops and livestock alike.  Malnourishment is a way of life for children in rural communities.

45% of Sudan’s population is under the age of 14 years. 80% of these children live well below the poverty line. 80% of children do not attend school.

Who founded KIDS FOR KIDS and why?

Kids for Kids was launched in Khartoum on 8th March 2001 when Patricia Parker MBE, who had been visiting her son Alastair, had seen for herself the conditions in which children were living in in North Darfur. “I visited Darfur in 2001 and met a little 9 year old lad who was walking 7 hours to reach water and then carrying itto his mother and his three younger brothers and sister.Under Darfur there is one of the largest aquafers in Africa - yet no one was digging handpumps for villagers.Having met his mother and seen the three little goats she owned - her only possessions - I realised that introducing animal loans, providing handpumps - and other long term self sustainable projects, would have an immediate andeffect onwho were living lives of inexcusable hardship.

How Kids for Kids helps children in Darfur?

KIDS FOR KIDS lends goats for children to have milk. This contains essential vitamins and proteins and can be sold to pay for water – and education.  One goat costs 12 pounds or $30 Australian. It costs $180 to provide 6 goats for a family for two years and 6 of the offspring go to another family, and then another.  Over 1000 children are already benefiting from this scheme, and a further 2,792 families will receive help during 2006. Kids for Kids’ Veterinary Scheme trains paravets in the villages and provides veterinary drugs to protect entire flocks where there is no other veterinary help.  One mother said “Within a week of receiving my goats one had a little kid and she is now giving me four cups of milk a day.  This is the first time I have been able to rely on anything for my children.  Goats have transformed our lives.”

How you can help raise money for Kids for Kids to buy a goat for children in Darfur

Invite six friends to tea/coffee and ask them for just $5 each – and the six of you will be able to donate one goat to a child in Darfur. One goat costs  $30. Schools could adopt Kids for Kids and help children their own age by raising money through stalls and events.
