TIAW Release October 2009:

TIAW World of Difference Awards 2009

At the TIAW Annual Global Partnership Forum in 2007, TIAW announced it was creating a new awards program to honour women who have made an impact on the economic empowerment of women through a wide range of endeavours. These are often the “unsung heroines” of our societies, ordinary women who accomplish extraordinary things. The motto of TIAW is “Connecting to Make All the Difference in the World”. It was decided that each year, TIAW would honour up to 100 award recipients who have made a difference to the economic empowerment of women by naming them to the TIAW World of Difference 100 list.

Congratulations to these exceptional women who truly "make all the difference in the world".

For Immediate Release

TORONTO – Oct. 18, 2009 –The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) 2009 World of Difference Awards are being presented at noon on Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at a Gala Awards luncheon at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto, Canada. The event is co-hosted by Canadian Women in Communications (CWC). The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister of State (Status of Women), will present the TIAW 2009 World of Difference Lifetime Achievement award.

Created in 2008, the TIAW World of Difference 100 Awards annually name up to 100 women who have “made a world of difference” to the economic empowerment of women. In 2009, over 50 women from 23 countries were named. To view a full list of the 2009 Award winners, please click here. To read the bios of the Award winners, please click here.

“Every day, around the world, in countless ways, there are women helping other women economically. Whether they are in the smallest and remotest of villages or the big cities of the world, many of these women are unsung heroines, just as some of them are well known, but all of them deserve recognition because we know that when women flourish, societies flourish as well,” said Diane Morris, President of TIAW.

“That’s why we created the TIAW World of Difference 100 Awards, to honour the many different but important ways that women are moving the world forward by helping other women gain economic security and power.”

Each year, TIAW also names a TIAW Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, a woman whose contributions over time and the stature of her accomplishments have made an international impact on the economic empowerment of women. The recipient of the 2009 World of Difference Lifetime Achievement Award is Barbara Annis, President of Barbara Annis and Associates. For the past 20 years, Barbara has been passionately advocating the importance of understanding, acknowledging and accepting the differences in the way women and men think. She believes that those differences must be leveraged to improve productivity and remove barriers to women’s career advancement. Barbara has facilitated thousands of corporate workshops, keynotes, and executive coaching sessions on gender intelligent leadership to Fortune 500 Corporations, including Deloitte & Touche, IBM, Smith Barney Citigroup, UBS, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Intel.

She is the author of two best-selling books:
Same Words, Different Language, which offers groundbreaking insights to create win-win relationships between the genders and break through gender barriers; and Leadership and the Sexes, co-authored with Michael Gurian in 2009, which reveals the latest brain-based research on gender differences in leadership and how to tap the innate talents of both genders in the workplace and in the world.

Barbara is the Chair-elect of the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Her extensive studies have included work with exceptional thinkers such as linguist Dr. Fernando Flores at the University of California at Berkeley, neuroscientist Ruben Gur at the
University of Pennsylvania, psychologist Virginia Satir, Dr. W. E. Deming, and Dr. Willis Harman, Founder of the Noetic Sciences Foundation and The World Business Academy.

Barbara has been involved in a wide range of organizations including: Member of the Gender Leadership Team, Deloitte & Touche ; Co-Chair of the Advisory Board for the Task Force of an Inclusive Public Service, Treasury Board; Co-Chair, World Business Academy; Subject Matter Expert and Member of the Advisory Board, Social Context & Gender Equality Initiative, Department of Justice; Member of the Advisory Board, Gender Integration Project, Department of National Defense; President, Canadian Women Entrepreneurs.

TIAW will also present the Marian (Mandy) Goetze Award that recognizes a member of TIAW who has made an extraordinary contribution to the organization. The 2009 recipient is Lisa Mezzetti, a prominent
Washington DC litigation lawyer at Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll PLLC, who has filled several key roles in more than 11 years of service on the Board of Directors of TIAW.

Throughout the years, Lisa has been in charge of Resource Development, the high profile Washington Briefings events and has also served as 1st Vice President of the Board. She is an integral link between the current board and the growing and influential group of former board members who remain in touch and are kept informed of TIAW’s progress and accomplishments by Lisa. Her extensive travels with TIAW have played a part in building the extensive network of powerful women she is in touch with around the world.

“Research tells us that the advancement of women is critical to the advancement of society so I am absolutely delighted that TIAW is recognizing women of the highest calibre through its World of Difference Awards and Mandy Goetze Award. It is these extraordinary women who are leading communities, societies, businesses, schools and governments forward. We are humbled by their great accomplishments and offer our most heart-felt congratulations to all of them,” said Diane Morris, President of the Board, TIAW.

The Awards luncheon will be preceded by a panel on women’s entrepreneurship featuring International Trade consultant Doreen Conrad; the founder of Company of Women, Anne Day; entrepreneurship coach Lois Raats of Ready2Grow Associates and Diane Girard, founder and President of Global Links Network.

The awards will be followed by a high powered discussion on how to get more women onto corporate boards, featuring Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette, who has introduced quota legislation into the Senate,
Globe and Mail, CEO and Publisher, Phillip Crawley and Carol Stephenson, Dean, Richard Ivey School of Business.
